Metropolitan Arts High School
In Spring 2007, fifteen high school students from Metropolitan Arts High School collaborated in teams of four students and one teaching-artist mentor for a three-month period. Each team designed and realized four works of interactive media art in SMALLab that allow art museum visitors to explore the themes and concepts present in a selected American masterwork of art. The students’ works were presented in a six-month exhibition at the ASU Art Museum.
The media installations were created in response to four contemporary American Masterworks from the ASU Art Museum's permanent collection:
- Hung Liu's The Trophy
- Edward Hopper's House by a Road
- John Frederick Peto' The Rack
- Alexander Calder's Many Pierced Discs

During this session, students were first able to experience the SMALLab environment. We guided them through an informal exploration of scenarios that relate to the installations they are creating during this project
